One to One Tutoring

Evidence based instruction that builds confidence and clarity

Every child deserves to learn in a way that feels calm, clear, and supportive. Our one to one tutoring sessions meet students exactly where they are academically, using structured, research based methods that help learning finally feel manageable and meaningful.

Parents come to us because they want more than homework help. They want their child to feel confident again, to understand what they’re learning, and to experience steady, predictable progress. That is what we do best.

Why Families Choose Our Tutoring

Families trust The Learning Hive because our tutoring is warm, intentional, and grounded in strong instructional practices. We don’t guess or follow a one size fits all program. We teach with purpose, and we teach in a way that truly works.

Our tutoring offers:

  • Explicit, systematic instruction

  • A quiet, distraction free learning environment

  • Predictable routines and warm relationships

  • Clear scaffolding and individualized pacing

  • Instruction that builds skill by skill

  • A focus on deep understanding, not memorization

Parents often tell us that their child feels calmer, more confident, and more capable after just a few sessions.

Families often ask how we measure progress. Each student begins with a baseline academic assessment, and we track their growth throughout their time with us. You can read our most recent Student Achievement Report to see the measurable gains our students make in literacy and numeracy.

Math Instruction

Our math instruction focuses on understanding before memorization. We use hands on tools and visual models that help students see how math works, step by step.

We teach math through evidence-based methods that include:

  • Manipulatives and concrete learning

  • Visual strategies and models

  • Clear, direct instruction

  • Step by step breakdowns

  • Strategy development

  • Confidence building practice

Students quickly feel less overwhelmed and more capable.

Reading & Writing Instruction

We use structured literacy and the science of reading to teach children how to decode, spell, read fluently, and understand what they’re reading. This is not guessing. It is not memorizing. It is clear, step by step teaching that supports struggling readers and helps confident readers move ahead.

Lessons always incorporate explicit, systematic instruction in:

  • Phonological awareness

  • Decodable text practice

  • Explicit spelling and morphology

  • Writing foundations

  • Structured composition

  • Orton Gillingham–based strategies

These methods work for all learners and are essential for students who need support in reading and writing.

Additional Subjects We Support

While literacy and math are our most requested areas, we also provide tutoring in a range of subjects to support students through upper elementary, middle school, and high school.

We offer support in:

  • Science (biology, chemistry, general science, problem solving)

  • French (foundations, vocabulary, reading, writing, comprehension)

  • High school reading and writing

  • High school study skills and organization

  • Advanced math (pre algebra, algebra, geometry, and senior math foundations)

  • Homework help and subject clarity for Grades 7 to 12

Our tutors break concepts down clearly, teach step by step, and help students build the confidence and understanding they need to succeed.

  • Feeling behind or confused in school

Scheduling and Packages

We offer flexible scheduling with both during-school and after-school availability. Weekend sessions can occasionally be arranged when needed. Our tutoring packages are built to give students consistency, which is where the most meaningful progress happens.

One to one tutoring offers something classroom settings simply cannot: uninterrupted time with an educator who understands exactly what your child needs. With targeted instruction, calm routines, and steady guidance, students begin to feel more capable and confident in their abilities.

Our 14 and 28-week terms give children the time and repetition needed to build strong foundations, close skill gaps, and develop independence in their learning.

 FAQs

  • Most students make the strongest progress with two sessions per week. Students with reading challenges, decoding needs, or gaps in foundational math often benefit from more frequent instruction. We help you determine the best plan.

  • Many students benefit from support in more than one area. In most cases, we recommend separate sessions for each subject.

This allows us to stay focused, move at the right pace, and give your child the depth of instruction they need to make meaningful progress.

It also means they may work with different tutors, since we match students with educators who specialize in the specific skills they need most.

This approach leads to stronger outcomes and builds a more confident, well supported learner.

  • Many neurodivergent learners do very well in our quiet, structured environment. We take time to understand each child’s needs to ensure our setting is the right fit so they feel successful and supported.

  • We use a variety of well respected structured literacy programs and evidence based math instruction focused on conceptual understanding. Instruction is individualized based on skills and readiness - never one size fits all.

  • Yes. We support students in all subjects as well as executive function, and study skills through Grade 12 - and beyond.

  • Yes, but we do not charge extra for this. We begin with an informal assessment to understand your child’s starting point so we can design a targeted instruction plan just for them.

  • Tutoring sessions are 50 minutes, with shorter or extended options available depending on age and need.

  • Our tutors bring a strong mix of training, experience, and a deep understanding of how children learn. Many have backgrounds in education, child development, structured literacy, or evidence based math instruction.

More importantly, they are warm, relationship-centred educators who know how to guide children with clarity, patience, and encouragement.

We invest significant time in training our team so they can teach using the same research backed methods that guide all of our programs.

What makes a Learning Hive tutor exceptional?

Our tutors come from a variety of strong backgrounds, but it’s their training that makes them exceptional. Every educator at The Learning Hive completes extensive internal training led by specialists in structured literacy, evidence-based math instruction, and child-centered teaching practices.

This training is what ensures that every tutor, regardless of their previous experience, teaches with the same clarity, consistency, and research-backed approach that families expect from The Learning Hive.

We don’t rely on personal style or guesswork. Our tutors are equipped with the instructional tools, routines, and methods that allow children to learn in a way that is calm, clear, and effective.

This is what allows us to maintain the high standard of teaching that sets our tutoring programs apart.
